Upma is made of Semolina, Upma is one of the South Indian breakfast served in every Indian home, and specially made for kids in their tiffin.
Upma is very healthy and one of the good options to have in a breakfast/evening snack when you are on the weight-loss program.

Upma is served in almost all the restaurants in India, especially in South India.  Upma is not only healthy but also a delicious snacks option for all age group.
Making Upma is hardly matter of 10-15 mins if you had kept the semolina roasted and stored in air tight container.

For all those who are new to this recipe,
You can dry roast the semolina on low flame, till it turns little golden brown in color. Keep the roasted semolina in an air tight container and use it when you want to make the Upma, it will be quick. You will just have to saute with given ingredients when you wish to make Upma.

Let us see step by step recipe from roasting to the making of Upma.

Upma Recipe:

Semolina

Serves:4

Preparation Time:10 Mins
Cooking Time:10 Mins

INGREDIENTS:

  • 2 medium cups Semolina
  • 1 Medium size finely chopped Onion
  • 2 and a half-3 cup water (properly boiled water)
  • 3-4 Curry leaves
  • 1 tsp Asafoetida
  • 1 tsp mix of Mustard and Cumin Seeds
  • 1 tsp Split white Gram/ Urad Dal( it is white in color)
  •  2 tsp Ginger-Green chilly paste depends on how spicy you like( check vegetable pancake recipe for making this paste)
  • Salt to taste.
  • 1 tsp oil
METHOD:
  1. Take a pan, heat the oil in a pan after the oil is heated, add mustard, cumin and urad dal, curry leaves, asafoetida for tempering, add chopped onion and saute it properly.
  2. Add 2 cups of semolina and roast it. This is how it will look when you start roasting.

     3. Roast it on low flame and keep stirring continuously till it turns little brown in color.

  4. You can see the color change in both the pics (2 and 3). Roast the semolina till it changes color as shown in pic3.

  5. Add ginger-garlic paste and salt to the roasted semolina. 
  6. Then quickly add boiling water to semolina and keep stirring till it stops sticking to       the vessel. 
   7. If you feel your Upma vessel is burning then keep the non-stick pan on the gas and       keep the Upma vessel on it and let it cook on low flame for 2-3 Mins.
   8. Garnish it with some chopped onion, tomatoes, and coriander leaves.

SERVE HOT!!

Can be Served with: Pickle or can have plain also.
