Pongal is one of South Indian breakfast recipe, Pongal is a kind of porridge which is very healthy and yet delicious in taste. If you have any South Indian friend around, you can ask them and they make this dish very tasty.

I have a few South Indian friends and they have taught me this Pongal recipe, I had loved this dish and I make it quite often in breakfast. Pongal is easy to make and healthy breakfast option.

Pongal contains rice and Split green gram lentil which is high in proteins and healthy too. It is tempered with aromatic asafoetida and cumin leaves with the flavour of clarified butter/ghee. Pongal will have a nice aroma of clarified butter and asafoetida which will make it quite tasty.

It does not contain any spices so it's good for small kids or elders who cant eat spicy food.

Pongal Recipe:

Serves:3

Preparation Time:5 Mins
Cooking Time: 40  Mins

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 cup raw Rice
  • 1/4th cup Split Green Gram pulses/Moong dal(yellow)
  • 3 cups of water
  • 1/4th tsp grated Ginger
  • 1 tsp asafoetida
  • 3-4 Curry Leaves
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin Seeds
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper powder
  • 3 tsp Clarified butter/ghee
METHOD:

  1. Dry roast the green gram dal in a pan. Once you get the aroma of lentils, reduce the flame to sim. Transfer the lentils to a bowl of raw rice.
  2. Wash the mixed lentil and rice with water and soak it in water for 30 Mins.
  3. After 30 mins add 3 cups of water to mixed lentils and rice. Add cumin seeds, grated ginger, asafoetida and salt as per the taste.
  4. Pressure cook the above mixture. Allow 6-7 whistles in a pressure cooker.
  5. After the pressure cooker cools down, check if rice and lentil have been cooked properly. Mash little with the help of spatula. (pic2)
  6. Now take a pan add ghee, after the ghee is heated add black pepper powder, cumin seeds and curry leaves and stir well.
  7. Add the above tempering to mashed Pongal and mix well.
SERVE HOT!!
