Semolina Balls/Rava Appam


Semolina Balls locally known as Rava Appam, this dish is very famous in the Southern part of India.

Do you have any South Indian friend??  Then you get the chance to eat bunches of South Indian dishes like curd rice, idli, dosa, sambhar and so on. Appam was one such formula I learnt from my friend.

These Semolina Balls can also come to rescue for many moms who want to give their kids healthy snacks , especially when their kids refuse to eat vegetables in basic form. 
Even those who are on diet control program and are bored by eating salads or simple food, Semolina Balls can be a very healthy option.

Semolina/Suji/Rava helps you when you need to make instant nibble. With the assistance of only one ingredient ie. Semolina Balls/ Rava Appam Recipe


Serves 4 pax.

Preparation Time:10 Mins
Cooking Time: 45 mins

INGREDIENTS:
  • 2 Cup Semolina
  • 2 chopped onions
  • 2 grated Carrot
  • Ginger- green chilly paste (refer vegetable pancake recipe on this blog for making this paste)
  • 1/2 cup water
  • Baking soda
  • 1 tsp oil
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 4-5 curry leaves
  • 1 tsp oil
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 cup Yoghurt( If you are vegan/ do not want dairy based product in your diet, then go for soya yoghurt)

METHOD:
Batter consistency (pic2)

  1. Take a pan add Semolina and saute it till it turns a little brown. Let it cool
  2. Take a bowl, add onions, carrot,ginger-chilly paste, salt, yoghurt, coriander leaves and a little water for consistency. (See pic 2 for batter consistency.)
  3. Take a pan, add 1 teaspoon oil and heat it, add mustard seeds, 4-5 curry leaves, add this mixture to batter mixture and stir well
For Vegan Folks.
Tempering(vegan): Take a non-stick pan, add oil, mustard seeds, curry leaves and if require, add few drops of water

       4. Keep Batter aside for 5-10 mins.

  1.  The pan shown here in the picture is called appam pan, where you can make small size balls. Put this pan on flame heat it for some time, after it is hot, brush the holes with a little oil just to avoid sticking of batter. Add batter into the gaps.(refer pic3)
  2. Keep it on low flame for 7 minutes then turn the batter as shown in (pic4). Now cook for 7 mins again. Remove from pan and Serve.
Note: If you do not have appam pan then you can use the normal non-stick pan. Spread the batter on the non-stick pan in the form of balls size you want and turn after 5-7 mins. Repeat the same procedure till it turns golden brown.

SERVE HOT!!!

Can be served with: Tomotoe Sauce/ or any other sauce/green chutney.
